MRCGP exams
- AKT (Applied Knowledge Test): what you know. Often attempted in ST2.
- SCA (Simulated Consultation Assessment): how you consult under standardised conditions. Usually in ST3.
- Both must be passed by the final ARCP. Agree an exam plan with your ES and record it in your PDP.
For the SCA, see our SCA Guide. Exam-attempt limits and extension rules: check with your deanery.
The numbers by year
| Requirement | ST1 | ST2 | ST3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| MRCGP examinations (AKT, SCA) | none required | AKT often attempted | both passed by final ARCP |
| Form R (England) / equivalent self-declaration | before each ARCP | before each ARCP | before each ARCP |
| Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) | 1 per year | 1 per year | 1 (final) |
Full time, per training year unless stated. Less than full time: per-year totals stay the same and each 6-month review needs a pro rata share; 6-monthly ESRs and 12-monthly certificates are not pro rata. Check with your deanery and educational supervisor.
Notes on these numbers
- MRCGP examinations (AKT, SCA), LTFT: n/a
- Form R (England) / equivalent self-declaration, LTFT: Same.
- Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP), LTFT: At least annually.
Form R and declarations
- In England, Form R is a self-declaration completed before each ARCP; other nations have equivalents.
- Declare everything asked: significant events, complaints, investigations, health issues affecting practice, time out of training.
- An SEA recorded in the portfolio but missing from Form R is a probity concern.
- Late or incomplete Form R is a common, avoidable cause of an Outcome 5.
How to do it well
- Diary the deadline: usually before the deanery cut-off, not the panel date.
- Check your portfolio for any SEA or complaint reflection and make sure each appears on the form.
- Keep a copy of what you submitted.
Common ARCP pitfalls
- Form R submitted late or incomplete.
- Undeclared events.
- No exam plan in ST3.
