Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions trainees ask most. Where rules vary, we say so: your deanery and educational supervisor have the final word.

Questions and answers

Do CCRs from hospital posts count?

Yes. They count towards the 36 and to capability coverage. Add a line on what the patient will need from their GP.

Can one case be a CCR and a CAT?

Yes. A case discussed in a CbD or used for an Audio-COT can also be reflected on in a CCR. Do not copy the text: the CCR should show your own learning.

Does an LEA count as my QIA?

No. They are separate requirements.

Can my QIP be my leadership activity?

No. Quality improvement is assessed separately; choose a different leadership activity.

How many capabilities should I link?

The few the entry genuinely shows, usually one to three, each with a one-line reason.

Who can do my COT?

An approved GP educational supervisor or an approved, trained GP clinical supervisor. Not another trainee.

Who can sign off a CEPS?

A doctor at ST4 or above, an SAS doctor with equivalent experience, or a trained professional who does that examination in their own work. Not a peer, and not in a skills lab.

What if I cannot get 10 MSF responses?

Invite more people early (15 or more). In hospital posts, extra clinicians can stand in for non-clinical staff. Speak to your ES before the deadline.

Do I need an OOH log for every session?

No CCR for every session, but record every session in supporting documentation and get a feedback form. Write CCRs where you learned something new, and follow any contractual hours requirement where you work.

I am LTFT. Do I still need an ESR every 6 months?

Yes. ESRs and 12-monthly certificates are not pro rata; assessments and CCRs are.

My ESR was 3 months before the ARCP. Is that a problem?

The ESR should be within 2 calendar months of the panel. Ask your ES to add an update or complete a new ESR.

I had no paediatric post this year. What about the child safeguarding reflection?

Look for indirect cases (children in households of adult patients). If there are genuinely none, discuss the exception with your ES and record the discussion.

What happens if I fail the prescribing assessment?

It is formative: you repeat it, which is why the first half of ST3 is the right time.

Can I see who said what in my MSF?

No. You see themes and comments, not who wrote them.

What is the difference between ESR and ARCP?

The ESR is your educational supervisor's judgement and recommendation. The ARCP is the deanery panel's decision, based on the ESR and the portfolio.

I disagree with my ESR.

Discuss it with your ES first; you can add your own comments in the portfolio. Speak to your TPD if it is not resolved.

Is anything I type into these tools sent anywhere?

No. The tools run entirely in your browser and store data only in this browser (localStorage). Use Export to keep a backup or move devices. Never enter patient-identifiable information.

Where do I find the official requirements?

The RCGP WPBA pages and requirements summary; your deanery's ARCP guidance; FourteenFish help for how-to questions.

Where our information comes from

Compiled October 2026 from the RCGP WPBA pages (learning log, COT and Audio-COT, CEPS, MSF, leadership, PSQ, prescribing assessment, QIA and QIP, CPR/AED and safeguarding, urgent and unscheduled care, the August 2026 WPBA changes), the RCGP mandatory evidence summary, FourteenFish help pages, the Gold Guide, the GMC ARCP briefing, and deanery and VTS guidance used as a cross-check. Items where our sources were partial are marked "check current RCGP guidance". Next planned review: April 2027.

Not affiliated with the RCGP or FourteenFish; requirements change — always check the current RCGP WPBA pages and your deanery.
